Ecopartytime: Sustainable Ski Mountain Weddings

I saw an announcement recently that a very sweet friend of mine, Bronwyn, had recently become the Wedding Sales Manager of Purgatory Ski Resort  in Durango, Colorado. When I saw this, I flashed back to great memories of skiing and snowboarding at Purgatory & other ski resorts. It occurred to me that a sustainable ski lodge wedding would be a wonderful theme for this December Ecopartytime blog. What better way to celebrate nature’s true winter beauty than by highlighting the very mountains, trees and snow that make winter sports such a blast!

FYI - November – March is prime ski season. If you and your mate are lovers of fresh powder, chairlifts & Black Diamond trails, a ski lodge wedding might be for you. This wedding theme truly reflects nature’s beauty as well as a sense of fun and adventure.

There are some things to remember if you plan to take advantage of the amazing outdoor panoramas of a wintery mountain scene. Warm clothes, hot beverages and blankets are key essentials to consider when making your wedding plan. Make sure you let your guests know via initiation & your wedding website to bring a jacket and warm shoes if you will be outside for any part of the day.

Sustainable Ski Lodge Wedding - Snow Bunny Sensational

Just like putting together a ski outfit, winter wedding attire for groomsmen and bridesmaids should be warmer with multiple layers. Velvets & wool are great style choices, as are sweaters and wraps. For your ladies, make your bridesmaid’s gift something reusable like pretty snow boots or a sweet sweater or snuggly stole. If your wedding party members are “ski bums” like you and your significant other, ask them to bring their heavy boots & ski jackets for some fun ski-friendly group photos before and after the wedding.

Like I mentioned before, it is essential that your guests know if you are having a winter outside wedding so they can make warm choices when it comes to their outfits.

Sustainable Ski Lodge Wedding - Après-Ski Chic

Sustainable Ski Lodge Wedding – Après-Ski Chic
With a ski lodge wedding, you will have the choice
of doing an outside or an inside
ceremony. Let me tell you from planner experience,
you do NOT want a long ceremony if
you decide to be outside in the beautiful majesty o
f snow covered mountains. A 15 minute
ceremony is the limit in my estimation. That sound
s short, but a basic ceremony averages
between 10 & 20 minutes so you’ll be right in the m
iddle.

With a ski lodge wedding, you will have the choice of doing an outside or an inside ceremony. I love both options, but let me tell you from planner experience, you do NOT want a long ceremony if you decide to be outside in the beautiful majesty of snow covered mountains. A 15 minute ceremony is the limit in my estimation. That sounds short, but a basic ceremony averages between 10 & 20 minutes so you’ll be right in the middle of the curve.

Also make sure your guests have lap blankets and hot chocolate or hot toddies to warm them from the inside out if you plan on taking advantage of an outdoors mountain wedding.  Trust when I say they will be amazed and gratified for these small warm & thoughtful touches as they watch you seal your love with a kiss!

Sustainable Ski Lodge Wedding - Freestyle Fun

Instead of a guest book you’ll never look at, have your guests sign a pair of skis you can hang up in your house once you are married.   They’ll remember the “unique to you” element & each time you look at the skis, you’ll remember your sensational ski wedding.  Instead of table numbers, use the names of mountains the two of you love to ski or the different ski resorts you’ve been to as a couple.

Use sustainable winter décor elements like pine boughs, pinecones & holly berries to bring the great outdoors inside to enhance your Ski Lodge reception.

When it comes to feeding your guests, go heavy on warm comfort foods like organic heirloom tomato soup with grilled cheese bites and that winter favorite, the S’mores bar. For the pre-wedding & cocktail hour drinks, offer your guests a choice of traditional warming beverages like hot buttered rum, spiced apple cider and hot chocolate.

Set up a “ski” themed photo opp site so your guests can document all the fun of your ski lodge wedding wonderland. You’ll be amazed at fun & craziness that ensues from the pictures.  Make sure to create a hashtag like #weski or #ski2we so you can follow the fun on social media after the wedding.
